California - 1980’s
Spanish Missions, Yosemite, San Francisco
The Spanish Missions were built centuries ago to provide a center for Spanish emigration into the new world. They also provided a religious shelter and a school for the missionaries to convert the native North American Indian nations. Traveling along the California coast there are 21 missions to visit. Some have been rebuilt and refurbished due to damage from earthquakes and centuries of wear and tear. The San Carlos Borromeo Mission in Carmel and the Santa Barbara Mission both are classic Spanish designs. These Spanish Missions are perfect subjects for me. I can use different mediums to capture the architectural texture in the painting.
