Rio de Janeiro

Rio radiates an energy that no other city we visited can match. The beaches and coastal promontories combined with a sultry hot climate were the perfect locale. We lived in a resident hotel two blocks off of Copacabana Beach. We walked all the beaches from Ipanema to Leblon. Along with people watching, the outdoor markets, Pao de Acucar,  Corcovado  and touring the city on public transportation were the most memorable highlights of our stay in Rio. Shopping for fruit, vegetables and everything else was typical of outdoor markets. The fresh baked breads and pan dulce (sweet bread or Danish) was the highlight of our food shopping.

The “frevalas” are neighborhoods of houses built on the hills surrounding the city. The indigent and poor live in these frevalas and crime and drugs run rampant.
